When damage is caused by water, there are a number of things you can do quickly while awaiting the intervention of your insurer or a post-disaster clean-up team.

Here are a few recommendations to help you protect your property and avoid further damage if your home does not pose a health or safety hazard.

Throughout the process, be sure to document the damage by taking photos and videos.

Put your safety first!

• Do not enter the basement if electrical power is still present and water levels could short-circuit electrical outlets.
• If you have gas appliances and smell gas, please contact Energir.
• To avoid infection, we recommend that you wear suitable equipment (goggles, gloves, N95 mask and boots).
• Switch off electricity.

Remove water

• Use a pump to remove as much water as possible.
• If possible, move uncontaminated objects to a safe place.
• Use a shop vac to remove any remaining water.
• Remove and dispose of all wet objects. Only solid, non-porous objects can be cleaned and disinfected.
• Install a dehumidifier (commercial if possible) and keep relative humidity below 60% (this should be done as soon as possible to prevent mould formation).
• If possible, confine the affected area with a plastic wall and tape to prevent moisture causing collateral damage to other parts of the house.

Clean and disinfect affected areas

• Remove and dispose of all building materials that have come into contact with contaminated water.
• Clean and disinfect walls and floors with a bleach-free disinfectant cleaner. Ventilate and dry properly
• Only after cleaning and disinfecting, promote air circulation (use fans in conjunction with your dehumidifier) to dry out the basement.
• Don’t rebuild just yet! Make sure the area is properly dried out.

ATTENTION
Water from floods and sewer backups is considered black water damage and is unhealthy; it may contain sewage waste and other contaminants that can have adverse health effects if ingested or in contact. Buildings constructed before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos in their materials. For further information, we strongly recommend that you contact the authorities before stripping walls or floors.
